Cairns Backpacker guide the best things to see and do in Cairns
Well known as the Adventure Capital of Australia, Cairns is also the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Home to the only Bungy tower in Australia.
The must do’s in Cairns is scuba diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef there are plenty of Great Barrier Reef day tours. However, nothing comes close to staying on the Great Barrier Reef on a liveaboard.
Number 2 on the list is seeing the Daintree Rainforest, doing the walks, seeing crocodiles on a river cruise and hiking through the rainforest.

Cairns History
Founded in 1876, Cairns initially established to serve miners en-route to the Hodgkinson River goldfield in the tablelands to the west of the city.
After the construction of a regional railroad Cairns eventually developed into a regional hub, serving as a major export point for the agriculture produced on the lowlands and tablelands.
The city saw further development during WWII when it was used as a strategic base by both the Americans and the British for staging operations in the Pacific.
Where is Cairns
Cairns has come a long way from its rustic roots. Situated about 1,700 kilometres north of Brisbane and 2,700 kilometres north of Sydney, tourist flock to this city of 142,000 in search of tropical weather, beautiful beaches, excellent shopping, and a vibrant night-life. Grab a Greyhound Bus Ticket

Cairns also serves as a jumping-off point for those who want to explore the Great Barrier Reef or the dramatic landscapes of the Atherton tableland.
